SPEAKER_00: With me today is SPEAKER_01: Detective Gary Tolleson, Idaho State Police. SPEAKER_02: Attorney for SPEAKER_00: Perfect. SPEAKER_00: As as we previously stated, you do not have to answer our questions. SPEAKER_00: You are not a suspect. SPEAKER_00: If there's a question that makes you uncomfortable or you just don't feel comfortable with, just let us know, and we can we can bypass it. SPEAKER_00: Uh, if you if you build comfort towards it later, we can address that later. SPEAKER_00: Okay? SPEAKER_00: But, um, and at any given time, you can tell us I I'm done. SPEAKER_00: And and we understand. SPEAKER_00: Okay? SPEAKER_00: So, um, we're we are truly appreciative of you taking time. SPEAKER_00: This is interview, what, five? SPEAKER_00: I don't know. SPEAKER_00: Six. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: It's been a lot. SPEAKER_00: Um, and, um, we are truly grateful that that you're so cooperative and and helpful with this. SPEAKER_00: Uh, your attorney is present today, which is is If at any time need to stop the interview, she knows what to do. SPEAKER_00: So, uh, alright. SPEAKER_00: We're gonna start with the VBQ. SPEAKER_00: Um, thank you. SPEAKER_00: Very long form. SPEAKER_00: Uh, the first question on here is, uh, your relationship to the victims, how long you've known each of them. SPEAKER_00: You've known Xana since August 2022. SPEAKER_00: Can you tell me? SPEAKER_02: Well, August 2021 because I met so I joined freshman year, which would be August 2021. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_02: Xana and Maddie are Xana is a grade older than me. SPEAKER_02: Maddie's two grades older than me. SPEAKER_02: I met them from there. SPEAKER_02: I got close with Maddie because big is Maddie. SPEAKER_02: And so me and go over to Maddie's house all the time. SPEAKER_02: I didn't know Kaylee at all, really, until that following spring when I met her the first time. SPEAKER_02: Maddie had told me, Xana, and Kaylee that we're all in we're all gonna live together. SPEAKER_02: That's when I met Kaylee and then I got to know her more this semester. SPEAKER_02: I didn't know I knew Ethan and Xana were dating, but I didn't really know Ethan at all until this semester when I first met him. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: You actually just answered all of those for SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm sorry. SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: You're great. SPEAKER_00: That's great. SPEAKER_00: I appreciate that. SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's that's perfect. SPEAKER_00: So you had a pretty good relationship with Yeah. SPEAKER_00: With your roommates, with your friends there. SPEAKER_00: And we'll we'll talk more about that as we progress. SPEAKER_00: You already know the questions. SPEAKER_00: You already answered them all, but we'll we'll just kind of progress through this. SPEAKER_00: Last contact with them, you saw him at the party. SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is for Ethan, that is, on the twelfth, around 10:30PM, and and I think that's consistent with what you've previously stated in your interview. SPEAKER_02: So I know. SPEAKER_02: Like, I went to some camera, but I don't know exactly the time that I last saw them. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: And then Kaylee and Maddie, you were hanging out with them, and I'm just going off of mine. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Hanging out with them upstairs for a little bit. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: In Kaylee's room. SPEAKER_00: Yep. SPEAKER_00: Yep. SPEAKER_00: And that was about 02:30 in the morning. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Went back to bed, so that was last. SPEAKER_00: Feel like what what were y'all talking about? SPEAKER_00: They had just gotten back from a club. SPEAKER_00: Should I We were, SPEAKER_02: obviously, we are all a little bit drunk. SPEAKER_02: Kaylee and Maddie got Grub Truck, and Maddie kept taking Kaylee's Grub Truck. SPEAKER_02: There was, like, a video of me and her, and we're like, oh, should we go get Grub Truck? SPEAKER_02: And we're like, well, no one can drive. SPEAKER_02: So we're in debating, texting the Uber driver. SPEAKER_02: We knew him really well because we ubered a lot, and so he knew most of us. SPEAKER_02: Okay. SPEAKER_02: So that was, like, our last conversation was deciding for SPEAKER_00: That's why you were calling or texting. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: They SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Driver. SPEAKER_02: He knows us pretty well. SPEAKER_00: I gotcha. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: It sounds this it's a really unfortunate reason why we're meeting today, but feel free to fondly recall like like we just did because it sometimes it can be helpful. SPEAKER_00: Mhmm. SPEAKER_00: Alright? SPEAKER_00: So sorry that's the last time you saw him, but it sounds like it was a good time. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: It was a good time. SPEAKER_00: Good. SPEAKER_00: Good. SPEAKER_00: The the next portion is kind of family and background Mhmm. SPEAKER_00: On the VBQ, and you actually know someone for each of them. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Family members and whatnot, which is which is great. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: So for Ethan, you know, uh, I've had the opportunity to meet both of them. SPEAKER_00: What do you what do you think about? SPEAKER_02: I think I think they're both really nice. SPEAKER_02: I know Ethan and bicker sometimes because they're I know they were both very protective of me because I was, like, their little sister, you know, and she's really nice. SPEAKER_02: Her and Santa were pretty close and her some her and her friends would come over to our place all the time, and she was always super sweet and super nice to us. SPEAKER_02: But I don't I don't know Ethan or their parents' names. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: And that's alright. SPEAKER_00: That's alright. SPEAKER_00: Out of Ethan which one was kind of the more dominant? SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't say just because she was, like, very younger. SPEAKER_02: Like, she always kinda, like, they were more protective of her. SPEAKER_02: I don't really know which one was more dominant, like Ethan or I knew Ethan a lot more than I knew from what I've seen maybe Ethan just because I guess that I know know him more, I guess. SPEAKER_00: K. SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: That's fair. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: I don't really know. SPEAKER_00: For Zaina, you know her father's Have you met SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: For parents weekend, he came up. SPEAKER_02: He met my mom. SPEAKER_02: He was super nice. SPEAKER_02: And also parents weekend came up and visited. SPEAKER_02: I think that was maybe first or second time I've seen her. SPEAKER_02: I know don't if she's came over to the house before because she's only, like, minutes away, but she came over for a little bit for pregnancy as well. SPEAKER_00: Do you know where she came from? SPEAKER_02: Wazoo. SPEAKER_02: She's I think she's five as well. SPEAKER_02: I don't know for sure what sorority she's in. SPEAKER_00: So I've I've yet to meet but I hear she and Zayna look a lot alike. SPEAKER_02: Like, and they always denied it. SPEAKER_02: Zayna kinda got annoyed when I said they looked alike. SPEAKER_00: So even their father had had told me a time or two, he actually got them confused. SPEAKER_00: Really? SPEAKER_02: They looked they looked alike. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: And you know that Zayna you you wrote down here that both Zayna and Ethan were in a in a relationship. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Pretty good relationship. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: They were pretty good. SPEAKER_02: Think it was about a year. SPEAKER_02: They're both very similar. SPEAKER_02: They're, like, very goofy. SPEAKER_02: Like, if they're there, then it's, like when we go to parties, they were there, then it'd be fun. SPEAKER_02: Like, those that's how they were. SPEAKER_02: And everyone knew Santa, like, all of you by knew her, and then, obviously, everyone knew Ethan because he was dating her. SPEAKER_00: So they they know Ethan by association to Yeah. SPEAKER_02: I mean, I didn't even really know him until I met Xana, and people probably knew him beforehand because he was SPEAKER_00: It's interesting. SPEAKER_00: You're not everyone tells me that that same thing. SPEAKER_00: It's just they're they're just a lot of fun. SPEAKER_02: They SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Kinda life of the party. SPEAKER_00: And and, uh, you know, when they show up, things are gonna get a little more fun than they've been. SPEAKER_00: So for Kaylee, um, you knew that, um, she had a relationship with SPEAKER_02: Mhmm. SPEAKER_00: And and it looks like Now I I don't know if we've ever we know that there was something between her and but can you tell me a little bit more about her relationship? SPEAKER_02: I know, like, after and Kaylee broke up, was very mutual. SPEAKER_02: Like, there was no hard feelings, and he still came over and hung out. SPEAKER_02: Kaylee had just been kind of talking to me. SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they were, like, officially made at something, but I knew she would stay over at his place. SPEAKER_02: We'd pick her up every now and then And they ended up talking, but I don't know, like, how serious it was. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: Didn't ever come over and just hang out with with Kaylee or SPEAKER_02: I don't know. SPEAKER_02: He like, when we we have parties at our house and we have a lot of so he would be over quite a few times, and I know him just from U of I. SPEAKER_02: But I don't think he ever, like, came over and just hang out with Keeley. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_02: And then also SPEAKER_00: Oh. SPEAKER_00: Like Okay. SPEAKER_02: For through our sorority at, like, Greek life and stuff. SPEAKER_02: So I don't think he ever just, like, hang out with just Keely at our house from what I know of. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: Now from what I under pretty tight. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: But but also kinda Yeah. SPEAKER_02: It's associate. SPEAKER_02: Like, out of my friend we would just hang up. SPEAKER_02: And I don't some of you guys are always very, like don't always go together. SPEAKER_02: But SPEAKER_00: I've heard there's been a few SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: There's been a few. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't fully know them, and I don't really know why they're not, like, super close, but that's just how they are. SPEAKER_00: K. SPEAKER_00: For Maddie, you you know her mother is Have you met SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: But I've was, like, sitting next to Maddie, I saw her FaceTiming her mom and knew that her name was And and I know she has a stepdad or maybe her mom's just dating someone. SPEAKER_02: I don't know his name, though. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: And you know that she was in a relationship with Yeah. SPEAKER_00: How was that relationship? SPEAKER_02: That was pretty good. SPEAKER_02: The dating, I think it was a little over a year. SPEAKER_02: She would call him, like, about every single night. SPEAKER_02: There was one instance. SPEAKER_02: I think it was during spring break. SPEAKER_02: She was in Mexico, and she was drunk and, like, was dancing with maybe accidentally kissed him. SPEAKER_02: I don't know the full story because I wasn't there. SPEAKER_00: When you say were you referring to SPEAKER_02: I think that's a Car's tension. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: But they I think they talked it out and they seemed pretty fine after that. SPEAKER_02: Like, they just moved past it. SPEAKER_02: And, like, whenever we would go to she wouldn't really say hi to like, not make it, like, you know, worse. SPEAKER_02: And, like, being say hi, but that was pretty much it. SPEAKER_00: K. SPEAKER_00: I would have loved to have added columns on here for you and Yeah. SPEAKER_00: That's not part. SPEAKER_00: But Yeah. SPEAKER_00: It from what everything I've learned, you you're all just really good people. SPEAKER_00: And yeah. SPEAKER_00: Describe the quality, positive and negative, of the victim's relationship, I. SPEAKER_00: E. SPEAKER_00: Strength of bonds, ongoing conflicts, you know, so on and so forth. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: I kinda mixed that question, that other question up. SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: It's okay. SPEAKER_00: So for Ethan, you describe, uh, was at the house a lot. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: We liked him there. SPEAKER_00: Social, goofy, easy, talking. SPEAKER_00: You ever just hang out with Ethan? SPEAKER_00: Just shoot the breeze? SPEAKER_02: Not just by myself. SPEAKER_02: I like, I wouldn't say I just hang out with him by myself. SPEAKER_02: Usually, like, Xana was there. SPEAKER_02: I'd hanging out with Ethan. SPEAKER_02: To me, he was more like an older brother, I would say. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: Usually, it was like usually, it was all four, like, five of us, me and the girls, and then Ethan would be there as well. SPEAKER_02: Because usually Ethan was wherever Xana was. SPEAKER_00: I've heard that a lot. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: Actually. SPEAKER_02: Yep. SPEAKER_00: Yep. SPEAKER_00: For Zaina, energetic, positive, uh, energy, hardworking, uh, nice, genuine. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Let's talk more about that. SPEAKER_02: Um, she was just like obviously, she was like the party of the life, but she was also very hardworking. SPEAKER_02: Like, she wasn't just this party girl. SPEAKER_02: We had the our math class together. SPEAKER_02: We both felt it felt it a few times. SPEAKER_02: And so Xana was the one that always, like, pushed me to actually go to it and actually do good on it. SPEAKER_02: And she, like, would set a certain time, like, certain time she would set to that class. SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of people didn't know that she was very hardworking because people just most saw the parties out of her, but she was very hardworking. SPEAKER_02: And she, like, if she's gonna tell you something, she can tell you the absolute truth. SPEAKER_02: Like, she's not gonna, like like, if I were ask her a question, like, oh, does my outfit suck? SPEAKER_02: She'd be yeah. SPEAKER_02: It does. SPEAKER_02: Or she would just tell me the absolute truth. SPEAKER_02: That's what I mean by, like, genuine. SPEAKER_02: Like, she's not gonna lie to my face. SPEAKER_00: That's a good trait. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: And, obviously, you respect her SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: For for having that those traits. SPEAKER_00: It's great. SPEAKER_00: Kaylee. SPEAKER_02: Um, one time we were this is before school started. SPEAKER_02: We were all in the living room. SPEAKER_02: We had some guys over, and Katie wanted to do this prank. SPEAKER_02: It was like this fake number. SPEAKER_02: So you, like, are able to text someone without them knowing that's your I'm like, it's a fake number. SPEAKER_02: So I just started texting Xana as like a fake person. SPEAKER_02: It was like, oh, another beer bong, another pair of shoes. SPEAKER_02: Like, I can see you're wearing a black Converse, like those kind of pranks. SPEAKER_02: And we would just be laughing and Xana would be, like, freaking out. SPEAKER_02: She's like, no. SPEAKER_02: Someone's actually texting me. SPEAKER_02: And then she'd look at Kaylee, Kaylee would just start laughing. SPEAKER_02: And then so me, Kaylee, and Xana all got to the house before Maddie did this semester. SPEAKER_02: And we never, like we we hung out with Kaylee a few times, but not that much. SPEAKER_02: We didn't know her that well, but we got along with her really well. SPEAKER_02: And she would always be like, oh, look. SPEAKER_02: I'm you know, I'm such a prankster. SPEAKER_02: We should do a prank. SPEAKER_02: And so she decided that when Maddie got home, she would start yelling at us, like, as a joke that we took her alcohol or something. SPEAKER_02: Like, just those, like, stupid kind of pranks, but, obviously, they were all jokes and we would just be laughing. SPEAKER_02: And we tried to get Maddie to think that we weren't gonna get along. SPEAKER_02: And she came downstairs and was like, what is going on? SPEAKER_02: And was kinda worried that we weren't gonna get along, but we told her it was just a joke. SPEAKER_00: That's great. SPEAKER_00: That's great. SPEAKER_00: I like pranksters. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: It adds a little excitement. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: That's how Kate always was. SPEAKER_00: For Maddie, a very loving, genuine personality, a social and outgoing person. SPEAKER_00: On her, you you actually identified the only conflict I think of was last year in Mexico when she kissed Betty and and talked about it and seemed to seemed to work out Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Past it. SPEAKER_00: Right? SPEAKER_00: K. SPEAKER_00: That that's that's very good. SPEAKER_00: That's that's you know, these are these are some things we just don't get to hear about a lot. SPEAKER_00: And and I hate to say it because we don't ask the questions and we need to ask these questions. SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is funny because and I don't mean funny, uh, in a in a SPEAKER_02: bad thing, SPEAKER_00: but every person that I put this in front of in your age group says, nope. SPEAKER_00: I I don't know anything about this. SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, well, hold on now. SPEAKER_00: Let's let's talk about this. SPEAKER_00: There's there's been parties and disturbance calls and people running out the back door of that house on numerous occasions and so on. SPEAKER_00: So and they're like, well, yeah, but we weren't arrested. SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, yeah. SPEAKER_00: We could play. SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we had the cops come to our house quite a few times. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: And usually, it was like, Kayla or Maddie would talk to them because they were 21, and me and was kinda scared. SPEAKER_02: But from what I know, there was no, like, arrests. SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they ever got, like, tickets or anything. SPEAKER_00: Right. SPEAKER_02: I don't know, like, about that kind of stuff. SPEAKER_02: And, like, no, like, arrests for drug use, alcohol use, that kind of stuff. SPEAKER_00: None of SPEAKER_02: that that I knew of. SPEAKER_02: Good. SPEAKER_00: You know? SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: We all have our youthful indiscretions. SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Um, I I openly talk about this because it's funny. SPEAKER_00: Uh, when I was in college, I paid my rent by having keggers. SPEAKER_00: I'm just business majors. SPEAKER_00: Right? SPEAKER_00: Had to That's interesting.
