SPEAKER_00: This is detective sergeant Mike Van Luven with the Idaho State Police.
SPEAKER_00: With me is detective Rich Alderson, and we're here interviewing with
SPEAKER_01: at the district one office.
SPEAKER_00: I'd like to start, I think, by just recapping what we talked about already.
SPEAKER_00: And if I got anything wrong, then correct me.
SPEAKER_00: So so this is all accurate.
SPEAKER_00: And I know this is a little disjointed, but this is just the way our conversation went in order.
SPEAKER_00: So first we sort of talked about your relationship with the other folks that were there in the house.
SPEAKER_00: So Kaylee was your girlfriend of and you broke up.
SPEAKER_00: I apologize.
SPEAKER_00: Let me put this on you.
SPEAKER_00: Kaylee was your girlfriend and you broke up approximately three months ago, and that you had attended school with Madison.
SPEAKER_00: Is that right?
SPEAKER_00: K.
SPEAKER_00: You knew Xana, and you'd worked with you'd met Ethan, didn't know him very well, exchanged snapchats.
SPEAKER_01: That k.
SPEAKER_00: You were born you went to
SPEAKER_01: do it for a year.
SPEAKER_01: For a year.
SPEAKER_00: For a year.
SPEAKER_00: Took
SPEAKER_01: it.
SPEAKER_01: What's You'd
SPEAKER_00: started dating Kaylee.
SPEAKER_00: Uh, she was taking a job in Austin.
SPEAKER_00: Uh, your breakup was a mutual decision.
SPEAKER_00: There was no drama involved.
SPEAKER_00: Then we moved to the to the day that this happened and you said you worked for them and you went to work on Saturday the twelfth from about 02:20 p.
SPEAKER_00: M.
SPEAKER_00: And you got off at 10:30.
SPEAKER_00: You work mostly in the kitchen.
SPEAKER_00: After that, you'd gone to the corner club and dropped off a pizza for your roommate and then you went home after that.
SPEAKER_00: Uh, your roommates, you live in a mostly communicate using but you did give me three of the force telephone numbers.
SPEAKER_00: Your vehicle is And after that, you drove home to the where to where you stay, and nobody was downstairs.
SPEAKER_00: You went upstairs.
SPEAKER_00: Your upstairs neighbors all of your roommates are all
SPEAKER_01: There's not one of roommates out there.
SPEAKER_01: It's just a friend.
SPEAKER_00: And then that that's the next and then also was there.
SPEAKER_00: And that's the next thing I was gonna say is that all those guys are all Is that right?
SPEAKER_00: They said that they were gonna go to the corner club.
SPEAKER_00: Uh, so
SPEAKER_01: you went downstairs, changed your sweatshirt, uh, got a beer,
SPEAKER_00: put some deodorant on, and you're waiting for your fraternity's sober driver to show up.
SPEAKER_00: And you don't remember who that person is, um, but you think that he was driving in and,
SPEAKER_01: uh, you and in
SPEAKER_00: that vehicle to the corner club.
SPEAKER_00: You arrived at the corner club approximately 11PM.
SPEAKER_00: Um, the place was packed and there was a line outside, but your your roommate and and fraternity brother was working there, so he got you in.
SPEAKER_00: You got into a converse confrontation with a guy named who was a because was messing with one of your friends pulling their hair or something like that.
SPEAKER_00: And and sort of told you to back off, and you and came to some sort of a peace and bought each other a shot of tequila.
SPEAKER_00: You saw Kaylee at the corner club.
SPEAKER_00: You don't know who she arrived with or who she left with.
SPEAKER_00: You don't know whether she got there first or you got there first.
SPEAKER_00: Um, it was common to see Kaylee at the corner club.
SPEAKER_01: I'll say one thing.
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
SPEAKER_01: Um, as far as I know, just based off, like, the video from the Grub Traps and stuff, I believe that Kaylee and Maddie might have left the bar with just because they enter the camera, just them three together.
SPEAKER_01: And then he steps back as they go up to order.
SPEAKER_00: And I wanna talk more about him.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: That that's definitely a topic of conversation today is is but do you remember seeing at the corner cliff?
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: Did you know him enough that if he was there, you would have said, hey.
SPEAKER_00: I mean, could it could he have been there and you just wouldn't have noticed?
SPEAKER_01: I didn't even know his name until I recognized the kid in the video and I sent it, that screenshot, to a friend.
SPEAKER_01: And, uh, they said, Uh, yeah, that's I believe that's And then I looked up his name and I kind of put the faces to match, and that's how I got that.
SPEAKER_01: But, um, I don't I probably wouldn't have even noticed or, like, thought of anything if I did lay eyes on him there.
SPEAKER_00: Because you didn't know her?
SPEAKER_01: No.
SPEAKER_01: Not really.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So he Well, let's wait for that.
SPEAKER_00: I I I can I want to talk about him?
SPEAKER_00: But let's finish this recap first.
SPEAKER_00: Girls that were friends of Kayleigh's that you did remember seeing at the bar with her were coincidentally was a girlfriend of were those three
SPEAKER_01: all Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: Um, I asked what you talked about with with Kaylee.
SPEAKER_00: So you said hi, and you talked about the tussle you got in with, and that you left the corner club about 1AM.
SPEAKER_00: Um, in total, you'd had before getting there you went outside and your sober driver who was the freshman from your house, he'd gotten pulled over by the police and you had too many people to get in the car since the cops were there.
SPEAKER_00: So you held back, uh, with some of your friends and called for a ride to your chapter said that the the freshman could be done for the night, and he drove himself and came and picked you up.
SPEAKER_00: And it was it it was you and and I'm not sure whether that those were the ones that he picked up or those were the ones that you hung out with when you got back to your house.
SPEAKER_01: Those are the ones that I hung out with when I was back at my house.
SPEAKER_01: Um,
SPEAKER_00: do you remember who picked you?
SPEAKER_00: When picked you up?
SPEAKER_00: Who was in the car?
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm fairly certain that was, but I can't be sure about anyone else.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: Um, so when you came back to the house and you hung out with your friends, um, you said you had urged to throw up.
SPEAKER_00: You tried, but you couldn't.
SPEAKER_00: Um, you had a couple And so you went into your room and shut the door and you fell asleep, and that you woke at about 11:30.
SPEAKER_01: Um, you were there with and and
SPEAKER_00: and then came in and talked about the cops being outside.
SPEAKER_00: And at that point, you tried to call Kaylee.
SPEAKER_01: Mhmm.
SPEAKER_01: That's right after we stepped outside of our house just to kinda see what was going on from
SPEAKER_00: Do you remember anything after you until you shut your door and went to bed?
SPEAKER_00: Do you remember anything else that happened in there?
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: Also Let's come back let's come back to that.
SPEAKER_00: You said Kaylee moved into that to the house where she was at the beginning of the summer, and it was the first time that she'd ever lived there.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: Then you you drew the sketch of the apartment that we talked about, and you identified the other roommates as and that you remember that Kaylee's old told you that and we're together when when the event happened.
SPEAKER_00: So we talked about other people that were there.
SPEAKER_00: You you walked down the street and you saw you said but you didn't know if it was a Ethan's or not.
SPEAKER_00: That that that you identified as and you think that he was the ones that called 911.
SPEAKER_00: You asked the officers about what happens and the first couple officers rebuffed you.
SPEAKER_00: And the third officer that you encountered, you told him that that you were Kaylee's ex.
SPEAKER_00: And he put you in the back of a patrol car for about forty five minutes.
SPEAKER_00: And then at some point, let you out and you sat on the curb with
SPEAKER_01: and and Also there?
SPEAKER_01: Two?
SPEAKER_01: I thought that was girlfriend.
SPEAKER_01: I have been a little bit confused about who is, but Is a good friend of she's the same pledge class as them in Pie.
SPEAKER_01: So when I put
SPEAKER_00: girl, boyfriend, that's not true.
SPEAKER_00: It's boyfriend.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: Correct.
SPEAKER_00: And who is
SPEAKER_01: She is a one of Xana's best friends who lived with Xana last year.
SPEAKER_01: I'm not super close with her, but I know she's friends with as well.
SPEAKER_00: Where does she live?
SPEAKER_01: I know it's close by.
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
SPEAKER_01: Might be the the White's apartments there, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_00: But she was there with you
SPEAKER_01: that morning after.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: And then you said who lived across the street that she came out to?
SPEAKER_01: Mhmm.
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: And also Ethan's And then U of I put out a text announcing that there had been a homicide and that upset you guys because the cops at that point hadn't even told you that a homicide had occurred.
SPEAKER_00: And then we talked about people that you were concerned that might have done when you talked about and you talked about and we'll talk about both of them further.
SPEAKER_00: Um, so try to remember as much detail as you can.
SPEAKER_00: When you got home when you got home and you hung out with your friends, what what time you said you left the bar at about 1AM.
SPEAKER_00: What time do you think you got back to your house?
SPEAKER_01: My I'm not very sure, but my best guess is a little after one.
SPEAKER_00: And where were who all was there exactly?
SPEAKER_01: At my house.
SPEAKER_00: Mhmm.
SPEAKER_00: But you were that was with you?
SPEAKER_01: Uh, the only two that I spoke to after being home before going to bed.
SPEAKER_00: And what did hanging out with them look like?
SPEAKER_00: Were you sitting down on a couch watching TV?
SPEAKER_01: Or Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: My we turned off two living rooms, one in the Main Floor, one in the Basement, and my bedroom's on the Main Floor right next to that living room and sat on the couches for a few minutes.
SPEAKER_01: I think it was probably about ten, fifteen minutes between the time I got home from when I went to bed.
SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So you'd had you'd had some to drink.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So, um, a little after one, ten to fifteen minutes, so what time do you think that you finally went into your bedroom, shut the door, and went to bed?
SPEAKER_01: One told me it would be my best guess.
SPEAKER_00: Did you have any contacts with anybody else that you recall after that until you woke up the next morning?
SPEAKER_00: Do you remember Kaylee calling you or texting you?
SPEAKER_00: You have no memory of that.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So last night, they sent me printouts from your phone.
SPEAKER_02: You said you missed calls.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: I do have I had when I woke up, since even after I found out about, like, after everything happened, I noticed my phone had, I think, four missed FaceTime calls from Kaylee and three missed calls from Maddie along with, um, I think, two more missed calls from Kayla's, seven calls from Kayla, three from Maddie.
SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01: Say that one more time.
SPEAKER_01: Um, how how does missed calls from Kayla and three from Maddie.
SPEAKER_01: Four of Kaylee's were on FaceTime.
SPEAKER_00: Seven from Kaylee and three from Maddie?
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: And which four of the calls from Kaylee were FaceTime calls?
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: And none of them from Mandy were FaceTime?
SPEAKER_01: They're all just normal calls?
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: K.
SPEAKER_01: Is that normal for y'all to
SPEAKER_02: communicate via FaceTime or phone or what method?
SPEAKER_02: Kaylee would call
SPEAKER_01: me off the hook quite often.
SPEAKER_01: Um, it's not normal for Maddie to just call me, especially three times in the middle of the night.
SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
SPEAKER_01: I mean, Kaylee has called me in the past when, like, she's, like, walking home and she's just, like, feels like she's being followed or something.
SPEAKER_01: She'll just, like, give me a call and just, like, wanna have someone on the phone.
SPEAKER_00: K.
SPEAKER_00: Did you and Kaylee have any sort of an argument the night before at the corner club?
SPEAKER_00: Was there any dispute?
SPEAKER_00: Were you upset?
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So I wanna I wanna pull these out.
SPEAKER_00: There's two sets of records here.
SPEAKER_00: There's one, our phone calls coming in from Kaylee and one, text messages coming in from Kaylee.
SPEAKER_00: Mhmm.
SPEAKER_00: These are all incoming to your phone.
SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I I point your attention to this one, which is 11132022 at 02:26AM.
SPEAKER_00: And there's a call that's it's it's sixteen point eight eight minutes.
SPEAKER_00: So almost seventeen minutes in duration, which was an answered call.
SPEAKER_00: Do you recall that call?
SPEAKER_01: I do not.
SPEAKER_01: Is it I is it a call from her?
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: It it's a
SPEAKER_01: What time was that?
SPEAKER_00: It's the very top one.
SPEAKER_00: It says
SPEAKER_01: it was at 02:26.
SPEAKER_01: It was an answered telephone call, and it went on for almost seventeen minutes.
SPEAKER_01: So do you recall that phone call?
SPEAKER_01: I do not.
SPEAKER_01: Is there audio from that?
SPEAKER_00: I doubt it, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is just they just emailed this to me instead asking about this.
SPEAKER_01: So So they say if it's a FaceTime or if it was a negative phone call?
SPEAKER_01: Can you tell?
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: It says if if you look here, it says if if it's a FaceTime, it says FaceTime.
SPEAKER_01: And if it's just a phone call, it says just a phone.
SPEAKER_01: So it looks like it was a phone call.
SPEAKER_01: It was answered.
SPEAKER_01: 226 went on for that many seconds.
SPEAKER_01: I do remember seeing that on my phone, but I do not remember answering nor
SPEAKER_00: So let let me ask let me ask you again.
SPEAKER_00: Have you ever had an experience where after drinking, you've you've had a
SPEAKER_01: phone call or you've done something or went somewhere and you didn't remember it until the next day.
SPEAKER_01: And then you realized that this had happened, but you didn't really remember it.
SPEAKER_01: No.
SPEAKER_01: I've never had some.
SPEAKER_01: So this phone call, I that's what I'm
SPEAKER_00: trying to get at is, could you have answered the call and maybe didn't really have a conversation and set the phone down?
SPEAKER_00: And it went on until Kaylee or somebody hung up or you hung up.
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I how how do we explain this, I guess, is what I'm asking?
SPEAKER_01: How you just explained is my best guess about what went up and or I thought it was, like, an alarm or something and just smashed my side button on my phone.
SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_01: And then the second the second group here are text messages.
SPEAKER_00: Let's go back a few days.
SPEAKER_00: So do you remember receiving a text message from her in the early morning hours of Sunday the thirteenth?
SPEAKER_01: I saw the text at the same time I saw the missed calls.
SPEAKER_00: The next morning?
SPEAKER_01: Correct.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So this shows and and what what was the subject matter contents of that text that you recall?
SPEAKER_01: She had my vape and some I think some did it.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: And I I show that you read that message at 12:44PM on the thirteenth.
SPEAKER_00: So just afternoon the next day.
SPEAKER_01: Is that?
SPEAKER_01: That's when I hold the phone calls too.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_01: Alright.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: Let's go back.
SPEAKER_00: Anything else you wanna cover?
SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm gonna continue focusing on you a little bit here.
SPEAKER_00: Did you do this?
SPEAKER_00: No.
SPEAKER_00: Did not do
SPEAKER_01: this?
SPEAKER_01: I did not.
SPEAKER_00: Is it possible that you did this and you don't remember because you were drunk?
SPEAKER_00: When you woke up the next day, were there any signs on your body?
SPEAKER_00: Was there blood on your body, blood on your clothes, anything like that?
SPEAKER_00: K.
SPEAKER_00: Do you have any weapons or specifically knives that you that do you have any knives?
SPEAKER_00: Do you own any knives?
SPEAKER_01: Pocket knives.
SPEAKER_00: Do you own any hunting knives or fixed blade knives?
SPEAKER_01: Not sure what that means.
SPEAKER_00: A knife that doesn't fold like a no.
SPEAKER_00: Do you not own any hunting knives?
SPEAKER_00: No military knives?
SPEAKER_00: Do any of your roommates own any knives like that?
SPEAKER_01: Not that I know of.
SPEAKER_01: No.
SPEAKER_00: K.
SPEAKER_00: So nobody has, like, a Rambo kind of survival knife in a sheath?
SPEAKER_00: No.
SPEAKER_00: K.
SPEAKER_00: And when we talk to your roommates, they're not gonna say that, oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00: He had this knife.
SPEAKER_00: We've seen it before.
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
SPEAKER_02: Were you aware of anyone in the home that owned the hunting knife or fixed blade knife or their weapons in the home?
SPEAKER_01: The only thing I should my home is visual.
SPEAKER_02: No.
SPEAKER_02: I'm talking the home where the murder secured.
SPEAKER_02: Kaylee and Madison is Zena's home.
SPEAKER_01: No.
SPEAKER_01: I mean, none of them are hunters or anything like that.
SPEAKER_01: I didn't see anything in there that would be like that.
SPEAKER_02: So somebody couldn't have come in and seen, like, oh, here's a knife.
SPEAKER_02: Like, they they wouldn't have had any weapons laying around that needs a
SPEAKER_01: a kitchen knife.
SPEAKER_01: But Right.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: Let's
SPEAKER_01: let's start with Ethan.
SPEAKER_00: When did you first become aware that Ethan was in this orbit of people?
SPEAKER_01: I knew Xana had a boyfriend last year, but I never knew who he was really until he moved in to the house that was on or tells Anna that
SPEAKER_00: But he did he wasn't living there.
SPEAKER_00: Right?
SPEAKER_00: He was still living his Yeah.
SPEAKER_00: But he was coming over a lot.
SPEAKER_01: I think he stood there most nights.
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
SPEAKER_00: So you you'd said that he parked there commonly as we left it.
SPEAKER_00: When did that start?
SPEAKER_01: When the school year started because Zander lived in the house for the last month or so.
SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, I never really even know who Ethan was until beginning of the school year when I would see him at their house, let's say, you know.
SPEAKER_01: Did you have occasion to have a conversation with him?
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: I would say hi to him every time I saw him, but I think our only, like, real conversation was the time we exchanged Snapchats.
SPEAKER_00: What was that about?
SPEAKER_01: I don't remember the conversation.
SPEAKER_01: I just remember kinda meeting him and chatting up with him for a minute while then getting a Snapchat.
SPEAKER_00: What kind of impression did you get of him as a person?
SPEAKER_01: Seemed like a really nice kid.
SPEAKER_01: Nice to me right off the bat.
SPEAKER_01: Pretty outgoing.
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
SPEAKER_01: Similar personality to Xana.
SPEAKER_01: What how so?
SPEAKER_01: Xana was just very loud, outgoing.
SPEAKER_01: Just had probably more friends than anyone else I know.
SPEAKER_01: Just did not like her.
SPEAKER_02: And you referred to him as a kid.
SPEAKER_02: I just find that interesting because you're a very young man yourself.
SPEAKER
