SPEAKER_00: I'm here at SIGCHI in the University of Idaho interviewing members Were both of you in Ethan's pledge class? SPEAKER_01: No. SPEAKER_01: Just SPEAKER_00: me. SPEAKER_00: Just you. SPEAKER_00: Which pledge class was that? SPEAKER_01: PC 21. SPEAKER_00: And what class were you in? SPEAKER_00: I had P. SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a little disjointed just because I'm going to be asking you both the same questions, but you're going to have to answer yourself. SPEAKER_00: I'll try to keep track of this. SPEAKER_00: So let's go start with you first. SPEAKER_00: When did you first meet Ethan? SPEAKER_02: Rush this year. SPEAKER_02: So let's say, like, August. SPEAKER_02: Mid August. SPEAKER_00: And have you spent a lot of time with Ethan? SPEAKER_00: I spent, like, not as much as other people did, but I spent some time with him. SPEAKER_00: Yes. SPEAKER_00: I would say SPEAKER_02: I was one of the closest ones in RPC with him besides RPC. SPEAKER_00: How would you describe him as a person? SPEAKER_02: Energetic, SPEAKER_00: fun, always happy. SPEAKER_00: What about conflicts? SPEAKER_00: Do you ever get in conflicts with people or fights or anything like that? SPEAKER_02: Never. SPEAKER_02: If it was, it was over, like, Venmo money just for him. SPEAKER_02: Like, not fitting after a meal or something. SPEAKER_00: Did you know much about his family? SPEAKER_02: And that's all I knew of him. SPEAKER_02: So I just like, barely talked to him. SPEAKER_00: So Did he talk about his past at all with you No. SPEAKER_00: Growing up or going to high school or anything? SPEAKER_02: Not really. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_00: Who would you say his best friend Did you how would you characterize his relationship with Xana? SPEAKER_02: Boister and girlfriend. SPEAKER_00: Did they seem pretty close? SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah. SPEAKER_00: Was there any other guys that were interested in Xana or maybe Xana dated before Ethan? SPEAKER_02: Not that I know of him. SPEAKER_00: How was Ethan in school as a student? SPEAKER_02: This year, way better than he was last year. SPEAKER_02: He buckled down this year. SPEAKER_00: He was out of house because he was on academic probation? SPEAKER_02: Mhmm. SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: But he would have been back in house? SPEAKER_00: What was he studying? SPEAKER_01: I think sports management, wasn't it? SPEAKER_01: Some sports. SPEAKER_01: That was tourism. SPEAKER_02: Could be tourism. SPEAKER_00: Did you ever talk about having any problems with anybody in any of his classes or Never. SPEAKER_00: Problems with professors or anything? SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: Now his was also a member here. SPEAKER_00: Were you friends with SPEAKER_02: I was. SPEAKER_02: Yes. SPEAKER_00: Same kind of background questions with talk about their background or Not really. SPEAKER_00: Growing up or anything? SPEAKER_02: Not, honey. SPEAKER_02: There you go. SPEAKER_00: How about money? SPEAKER_00: Did you ever see him having problems with money or buying things that you wondered where the money came from or anything like that? SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: Never. SPEAKER_00: What were some of his hobbies that he liked to do apart from school and Xana? SPEAKER_00: Sports. SPEAKER_00: He liked intramurals. SPEAKER_00: What sports did SPEAKER_02: he play? SPEAKER_02: He played volleyball. SPEAKER_00: What about anything else besides volleyball? SPEAKER_00: Played basketball last SPEAKER_02: think big basketball last year. SPEAKER_00: On an intramural team? SPEAKER_00: Where did he primarily spend time in your knowledge? SPEAKER_02: Here at Sigma Chi, he was always in room. SPEAKER_02: And then if he wasn't in room, he was at Zanos. SPEAKER_00: Did he have a job? SPEAKER_02: Did not. SPEAKER_02: During school, he didn't right now. SPEAKER_02: But SPEAKER_01: Did you SPEAKER_00: ever see him with any weapons? SPEAKER_00: Never. SPEAKER_00: Was he particularly religious? SPEAKER_00: Did he attend church services or anything? SPEAKER_00: I don't don't know. SPEAKER_02: I was making a call. SPEAKER_00: Do you know if he spoke frequently with his parents? SPEAKER_00: Did he talk about what he was gonna do after school was over? SPEAKER_02: Not with me. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_00: Did you get the feeling that he and Xana were gonna get married? SPEAKER_02: I did get the feeling SPEAKER_01: that he gonna married. SPEAKER_02: I thought they were commuting together. SPEAKER_00: Were you here the that night before at the party that was here? SPEAKER_00: Yes. SPEAKER_00: Did anything happen at the party that you remember that was the Nothing unusual. SPEAKER_00: Any conflicts, any arguments, anybody yell at anybody? SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: I never saw any of that. SPEAKER_02: I thought it went great. SPEAKER_02: I mean but SPEAKER_00: Where does where were you during the party? SPEAKER_00: I SPEAKER_02: was on the DJ booth SPEAKER_01: right here. SPEAKER_00: And do you remember where Ethan was during the party? SPEAKER_02: I saw him on the stage once, but that was it. SPEAKER_02: And then I talked to him there and then never saw him again after that. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: So what do you have any idea what time he left the party here? SPEAKER_02: Somewhere what time did you weren't there, were you? SPEAKER_02: I don't know. SPEAKER_02: Probably, like, around one maybe, 12:31. SPEAKER_00: Was it a themed party? SPEAKER_02: Was ESPN, and I say, yeah, sports themed. SPEAKER_02: Everybody's wearing jerseys and stuff. SPEAKER_00: He'd come from a formal. SPEAKER_00: Right? SPEAKER_00: Mhmm. SPEAKER_00: With and it was his had invited him to go. SPEAKER_00: Is that right? SPEAKER_00: Yeah. SPEAKER_00: Where was that at? SPEAKER_00: What house was that at? SPEAKER_00: Theta. SPEAKER_02: I was also with him there. SPEAKER_00: You were? SPEAKER_00: Mhmm. SPEAKER_00: So did he take Xanit? SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: He took, I think, his SPEAKER_01: I believe. SPEAKER_01: Was SPEAKER_00: that weird for him to go to a beta formal with? SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: They were very Xanos. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: Because Xanos at g five, so SPEAKER_00: she was Okay. SPEAKER_00: So, again, did anything weird happen at that party? SPEAKER_00: Any conflicts? SPEAKER_00: Anybody SPEAKER_02: Ever saw anything? SPEAKER_02: No conflicts? SPEAKER_02: Nothing. SPEAKER_00: Anybody out of place? SPEAKER_02: No one out of place. SPEAKER_00: Anybody here at the party out of place? SPEAKER_02: Not that I saw. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_00: When did you hear that something bad had happened over there? SPEAKER_02: The next day at around eleven. SPEAKER_00: Who told you? SPEAKER_02: Called me. SPEAKER_02: There was tech they were texting in our group chat and said that there was an unresponsive person that was found last night. SPEAKER_00: K. SPEAKER_00: And when did you find out that Ethan was one of the victims? SPEAKER_02: Around 11:30, I think. SPEAKER_02: Because I I called after that, and then he told me that that he was unresponsive and dead. SPEAKER_00: What was your first reaction when you heard SPEAKER_01: that? SPEAKER_01: Shock. SPEAKER_02: I was just like, SPEAKER_01: I couldn't believe it. SPEAKER_01: Did did you SPEAKER_00: guess that foul play was involved, or did you think that it might be just an accident or something? SPEAKER_02: Maybe, like, drinking. SPEAKER_02: I thought maybe drinking. SPEAKER_02: You know? SPEAKER_02: Yeah. SPEAKER_02: That's the first thing that I thought. SPEAKER_02: I didn't hear. SPEAKER_00: When you heard it was a homicide, it was a stabbing, and that all four of them had killed, what did you think? SPEAKER_02: I was in shock. SPEAKER_02: I was, like, just I had no idea what to think. SPEAKER_02: I couldn't believe it. SPEAKER_00: Did you do you suspect anyone or have any ideas about who might have wanted to do this or why? SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not. SPEAKER_00: Did you know Maddie and Kaylee? SPEAKER_02: I've been around, but I didn't I wouldn't say I knew them. SPEAKER_00: Did they ever come here to parties? SPEAKER_02: Yes. SPEAKER_02: I think they did. SPEAKER_02: You SPEAKER_00: think they yeah. SPEAKER_00: I've never seen SPEAKER_01: them here. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_00: How did you know Maddie and Kaylee? SPEAKER_02: They were roommates with Xana, and I've been over to Xana's, and that's I've seen them there before. SPEAKER_00: How many times have you gone over there and hung out at that house? SPEAKER_02: Three. SPEAKER_02: Or I went over and hung out twice, and then the other time, I was grabbing a speaker. SPEAKER_00: And who who were the people that were normally there? SPEAKER_02: Xana and Ethan, usually. SPEAKER_00: But did you ever go out over there when there was, like, a group of people, like, party? SPEAKER_02: Me, Ethan, Xana, and were over there with a group, but I don't know the other two girls over there. SPEAKER_02: I don't know they weren't the roommates. SPEAKER_00: Were there other guys there, like delts? SPEAKER_00: Or SPEAKER_02: There might be. SPEAKER_02: There's I've seen delts there before at parties, and I've seen betas there before. SPEAKER_00: So did you ever did you ever witness anything, any altercation or incident over at that house? SPEAKER_00: I did. SPEAKER_00: Any fights between people or any girls being mad, somebody else? SPEAKER_02: That's not an ordinary at all. SPEAKER_00: Did ever hear about any of the girls, you know, complaining about a soccer or somebody that they didn't trust or they didn't want to be around or anything like that? SPEAKER_02: Nothing. SPEAKER_02: No. SPEAKER_00: Have there been any unusual incidents, like, apart from this that had just happened in the general area in the last year that you can think of that were like a robbery or a prowler or somebody's car getting broken into or anything like that? SPEAKER_02: Nothing. SPEAKER_02: Okay. SPEAKER_00: Circle back to Ethan. SPEAKER_00: Is there anything unusual about his past that has happened to him or that he's accomplished that's out of the ordinary that you can think of? SPEAKER_02: Well, just the biggest things like him being last year, like, deficient, and then now he's just like he was academically well. SPEAKER_02: Like, started figuring his classes out and was doing better in his classes. SPEAKER_02: He was gonna be back in house. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: But as far as some car accident where he was the driver and maybe hurt somebody or something? SPEAKER_00: Nothing. SPEAKER_00: How about drug use? SPEAKER_00: And again, let me preface this with both of you by saying we don't care about that. SPEAKER_00: So we're just trying to see if he had a connection to another group that may have been responsible for this. SPEAKER_00: So do you I understand that he used Adderall from time to time That he vapes and that there was some cocaine use that was happening over there too. SPEAKER_00: Are you familiar with any of that? SPEAKER_02: He's familiar with the Adderall, but none of the SPEAKER_00: cocaine or yeah. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: So do you know where he got his Adderall from? SPEAKER_00: I do not. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: Anything drug related related to that house that you can think of that we should know? SPEAKER_02: Nothing. SPEAKER_02: That's I wouldn't know anything. SPEAKER_00: I think that's about all I have for basically going to go through the same thing with you. SPEAKER_00: So what did you think of Ethan when you met him? SPEAKER_01: He was just that he liked to have a lot of fun. SPEAKER_01: I mean but that was, like, all of us last year. SPEAKER_01: Yeah. SPEAKER_01: He's he liked to have SPEAKER_02: a lot SPEAKER_01: of fun. SPEAKER_01: That was that was really all I can tell. SPEAKER_00: Did he ever accomplish with other people that you saw? SPEAKER_01: No. SPEAKER_01: No. SPEAKER_01: I mean, little stuff around the house, but nothing major. SPEAKER_00: So did he ever talk to you about growing up or his past? SPEAKER_01: And he was he was really yeah. SPEAKER_01: He was gonna be back in the house and after a winter break. SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, he was doing a lot better. SPEAKER_00: Do you know what he planned to do after he graduated? SPEAKER_01: I have no idea. SPEAKER_00: Did you know if he had problems with anybody else on campus? SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: Either in the house or out of the house or any of his classmates or SPEAKER_01: No. SPEAKER_01: Nothing. SPEAKER_01: Nothing. SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: Ever see him buy anything that was expensive and wonder where the money came from? SPEAKER_00: No. SPEAKER_00: And where did he spend his time? SPEAKER_01: Xana's or Did SPEAKER_00: you ever talk to him about his parents? SPEAKER_01: No. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: So the night before it happened, were you here at the party? SPEAKER_01: I got the Amber Alert, and I was I didn't even know where King Road was at first, and then I got the text that I got a text from And he said, do hear what happened to Ethan Zanna? SPEAKER_01: And I said, what? SPEAKER_01: And he's just yeah. SPEAKER_01: That was that was when I found out. SPEAKER_00: What did you think? SPEAKER_01: I well, initially, I thought I gotta get back up here because I figured everybody would be, you know, struggling. SPEAKER_01: So yeah. SPEAKER_01: But I had I had I I've never experienced anything like this. SPEAKER_01: I mean, a lot of people out, so I I had no idea what to think. SPEAKER_00: When you found out that they the four of them had been stabbed in the house that night, what did you think in my who did you think was responsible? SPEAKER_01: I had no idea. SPEAKER_01: I had absolutely no clue. SPEAKER_00: Have you ever spent time over at that house? SPEAKER_01: Uh-uh. SPEAKER_01: I've been there one time. SPEAKER_00: Never observed any conflicts or girls complaining about somebody? SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've seen stuff happens back there all the time. SPEAKER_01: Like, I've seen fights back on that road, but nothing at that house. SPEAKER_00: Okay. SPEAKER_00: How about the same the drug question? SPEAKER_00: Do you know anything about Ethan using drugs or anybody All SPEAKER_01: I did is Adderall. SPEAKER_00: Do you know where their source of that was? SPEAKER_01: I do not. SPEAKER_00: I mean, somebody gotten broken into? SPEAKER_00: Or I mean, we SPEAKER_01: got broken into last year. SPEAKER_00: Who who got who did? SPEAKER_01: They broke in here and I messed with the trophies and stuff, I think. SPEAKER_01: So, like, another house Heavy for another house. SPEAKER_01: Yeah. SPEAKER_01: I can't think anything has happened back here beside I mean, besides us getting busted into, but that was it. SPEAKER_01: Oh, we've had actually, it was at the start of last year. SPEAKER_01: We've had, like, lab people have had laptops stolen and stuff from around here. SPEAKER_01: Like someone ripped his laptop from, like, the window outside the stairs. SPEAKER_01: I actually got their laptops taken as well. SPEAKER_01: When do you think that happened? SPEAKER_01: That was early. SPEAKER_01: That was I feel like that was early last semester. SPEAKER_01: Also, someone's car got busted into. SPEAKER_01: I think got busted into last year. SPEAKER_01: Might not have but someone's car got busted into last year, and somebody got laptops to them. SPEAKER_00: And you guys have no idea who did that? SPEAKER_01: We have no I don't I don't think they've figured out who did that. SPEAKER_00: Did they break the window or just reach in? SPEAKER_01: I can't say for sure. SPEAKER_01: I wanna say they I don't think they broke his window. SPEAKER_00: What which apartment? SPEAKER_00: He's in SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
